You have many options when it comes to hiking Mount Charleston. The Acastus Trail is an easy in and out hike that goes between 3.5 and 4 miles and has an elevation gain of about 400 ft. You can start this hike from two different spots. If you want to have the incline on your way back out, the starting point would be at a turnout by the Fletcher View Campground. We started at the bottom of the trail which is at the Spring Mountains Visitor Gateway and finished in just under 2hrs. Follow the sign to the hiking trails down behind the building and you will find easy signage to the Acastus Trailhead. The trail is a mix of paved road, gravel, small rocks and dirt. Along the way you will find signs that explain the geological history, how some of the formations were created, plants and trees in the area and much more. Benches are also located by each of the signs for a quick rest if needed. Your hike will take you through the Kyle Canyon Picnic Area and up to the Fletcher View Campground where you wil turn around and head back out. You will even learn a little about how the Civilian Conservation Corps helped shape the area. Once you get back to your car go get some lunch at The Retreat on Charleston Peak, which is just up the road.
